In a significant decision aimed at recognising judicial excellence and experience, the Supreme Court of India has designated four former Chief Justices and Judges of various High Courts as Senior Advocates. The announcement was made following a Full Court Meeting held on 10 December 2025, presided over by the Chief Justice of India and the Judges of the Supreme Court.

The designation—considered one of the highest honours in the legal profession—has been conferred with effect from 10 December 2025. Those elevated include:

  1. Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili, Former Judge, High Court for the State of Telangana
  2. Justice Pavankumar B. Bajenthri, Former Chief Justice, High Court of Judicature at Patna
  3. Justice Satyendra Singh Chauhan, Former Judge, High Court of Judicature at Allahabad
  4. Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, Former Chief Justice, High Court at Calcutta

The decision underscores the Supreme Court’s continued commitment to recognising distinguished contributions made by members of the higher judiciary, even after their retirement from judicial office. Senior Advocate designation is granted to advocates with exceptional ability, standing at the Bar, and special knowledge or experience in law.

The notification was issued by Devender Pal Walia, Registrar (CDSA), formalising the appointments.

This move is expected to further strengthen the Bar with the rich judicial expertise of the designated former judges, who will now be able to appear and argue cases before various courts and tribunals as Senior Advocates.
