Mission Ambedkar’s Founder Seeks Criminal Contempt Action Over Threats to CJI BR Gavai

The founder of Mission Ambedkar, Suraj Kumar Bauddh, has formally written to Attorney General R. Venkataramani seeking permission to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against two individuals namely  Aniruddh Ram Tiwari and YouTuber Ajeet Bharati allegedly involved in inciting violence against the Chief Justice of India (CJI), BR Gavai.

In his letter, Bauddh highlighted that prior to the attempted attack on October 6, a video circulated by a religious orator, Aniruddhacharya, also known as Aniruddh Ram Tiwari, directly threatened the CJI over his remarks in the Vishnu Idol case. The viral video, dated September 21, 2025, included statements widely interpreted as incitement to violence, with Tiwari reportedly stating, “If you want to get your chest ripped open, then let me know.”

The Chief Justice had, on September 18, clarified that his remarks regarding the Vishnu idol were made in the context of the temple being under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and that the Court could not grant the relief sought by the petitioner. Despite this clarification, Bauddh asserts that Tiwari’s video, along with other provocative statements, has contributed to a climate of hostility toward the judiciary.

Bauddh’s letter also cites objectionable remarks made by YouTuber Ajeet Bharati on his social media account on the same day as the attack attempt. The Mission Ambedkar founder stressed that such statements are aimed at inciting hate against Supreme Court judges and are unprecedented in the history of Indian judiciary. He warned that if such individuals are not brought to justice, the independence of the judiciary and the democratic foundations of the country could be at risk.

“These statements and actions are aimed at provoking violence against the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India and other judges. The tone and tenor of such public provocation are extremely dangerous. No court or judge should be prevented from discharging their duties without fear or favor,” the letter stated.

Bauddh requested the Attorney General’s written consent to initiate criminal contempt proceedings under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, against Aniruddhacharya alias Aniruddh Ram Tiwari and Ajeet Bharati to safeguard the dignity and independence of the judiciary.

The letter comes in the wake of a shocking incident on October 7, when 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to hurl a shoe at CJI BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court. While being escorted out, Kishore reportedly shouted that insults to Sanatan Dharma would not be tolerated. The Delhi Police did not pursue further action after the Supreme Court Registrar General declined to proceed with legal action. The Bar Council of India subsequently suspended Kishore.

The attempted attack on the CJI drew widespread condemnation across the political spectrum and the legal community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Chief Ministers including MK Stalin, Pinarayi Vijayan, Siddaramaiah, Revanth Reddy, and Mamata Banerjee expressed solidarity with the Chief Justice. Major bar associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, also condemned the incident.

The controversy has once again brought attention to the safety of the judiciary and the need to curb public threats against judges, with calls for strict action against individuals who attempt to intimidate or incite violence against members of the higher judiciary.
