A Goods and Services Tax (GST) officer in Lucknow has been booked following allegations of demanding a dowry of Rs. 1 crore and subsequently calling off the proposed marriage when the demand was not met.

The complaint was filed by the woman’s father on May 2 at the Chinhat police station. He also appealed to the authorities to intervene and prevent the officer’s impending marriage to another woman.

In response, the accused officer’s family has refuted the allegations, asserting that the marriage discussions had ended six months prior due to disagreements with the woman’s family. They claim that the dowry accusation is baseless and that the officer’s new marriage arrangement is unrelated to the previous proposal.

The case has brought renewed attention to the persistent issue of dowry demands in India, despite legal prohibitions.Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the allegations.
