The Ministry of Heavy Industries has notified an amendment to the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024, deferring its implementation to September 1, 2026. This change, issued via notification S.O. 2579(E) in the Gazette of India, allows more time for stakeholders to comply with the regulatory standards for listed machines and electrical equipment.

The amendment was made in exercise of powers under Sections 16, 17, and 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The government stated that the extension serves the public interest by giving the industry adequate time to adapt to the new safety requirements.

The amended order will now come into effect on September 1, 2026, instead of one year from the original publication date.

It will apply to machines and electrical equipment listed in the First Schedule annexed to the Order.

Assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components listed in the schedule will be regulated from a later date to be separately notified by the Centre.

The original 2024 Order was issued to standardize and regulate the safety of machinery and electrical equipment under a unified technical framework. The deferral is seen as a practical step to accommodate concerns from manufacturers and importers, giving them more time for transition and compliance readiness.
