The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has taken another significant step in strengthening its adjudicatory framework with the appointment and swearing-in of Shri Sanjeev Kumar Jain, IAS (Retd.), as Technical Member (State) of the Delhi Bench.
According to an official update shared by GSTAT, the oath of office was administered on June 16, 2026, by the Hon’ble President of GSTAT at the Principal Bench, New Delhi. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Jain’s family members, friends, and senior officials.
The appointment assumes importance as the GST Appellate Tribunal continues to expand its operational capacity to handle the growing volume of GST disputes across the country. With Mr. Jain’s induction, all sanctioned vacancies in the Delhi Bench have now been filled.
Delhi Bench Now at Full Strength
In a subsequent statement, GSTAT confirmed that the Delhi Bench now has its complete sanctioned complement of members. The addition of Shri Sanjeev Kumar Jain increases the total strength of members at the Bench to four, enabling the tribunal to function more effectively and address pending appeals in a timely manner.
The tribunal extended its best wishes to the newly appointed Technical Member and expressed confidence that his experience and expertise would contribute meaningfully to the institution’s functioning.
Significance for GST Litigation
The GST Appellate Tribunal is the key appellate forum for taxpayers and tax authorities seeking redressal against orders passed by appellate authorities under the GST regime. The operationalization and staffing of GSTAT benches have been closely watched by businesses, tax professionals, and legal practitioners due to the substantial backlog of GST disputes awaiting adjudication.
The appointment of experienced technical members is considered crucial for ensuring balanced adjudication, particularly in complex matters involving interpretation of GST law, classification disputes, input tax credit issues, valuation matters, and procedural compliance.
Strengthening GSTAT’s Institutional Framework
The latest appointment is being viewed as part of GSTAT’s broader institution-building efforts. Since the establishment of the tribunal framework, the government and GSTAT administration have been progressively filling judicial and technical member positions across various benches to facilitate the smooth disposal of GST appeals.
With the Delhi Bench now operating at its full sanctioned strength, stakeholders expect improved efficiency in case management and quicker resolution of tax disputes, a development that could provide greater certainty to taxpayers and tax administrators alike.
The swearing-in ceremony marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to make GSTAT a fully functional and robust appellate mechanism under India’s GST framework.
