The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued an official press clarification refuting reports and allegations circulating in sections of the media and on social platforms regarding a purported cash seizure linked to Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvaperunthagai.

The clarification comes in response to claims that surfaced on April 20, 2026, suggesting that Income Tax authorities had seized a substantial amount of unaccounted cash allegedly connected to Selvaperunthagai, referred to as “X” in certain communications. These claims quickly gained traction, raising concerns about possible violations of tax and election-related laws.

In its statement, the CBDT categorically denied these allegations, stating that no such cash seizure operation involving Selvaperunthagai or any related entity had been conducted by the Income Tax Department. The claims being circulated are factually incorrect and misleading, with no basis in official records or actions undertaken by tax authorities. The department emphasized that all enforcement actions, including search and seizure operations, are carried out strictly in accordance with due process and documented procedures.

The CBDT further explained that any legitimate search or seizure operation is backed by proper authorization and is followed by transparent documentation. Such actions are not conducted arbitrarily, and details are not disclosed publicly unless required under law or in public interest.

The statement also underlined that rumors and unverified reports can cause unnecessary confusion and potentially harm reputations, urging media outlets and the public to rely on verified official sources.

Addressing the specific allegations, the CBDT noted that there is no evidence of any undisclosed income or assets linked to the individual in question based on current records. No proceedings, inquiries, or enforcement measures related to the alleged incident have been initiated.

The tax authority concluded by advising stakeholders, including media organizations and political commentators, to exercise restraint and ensure accuracy while reporting on sensitive financial and enforcement matters.

The CBDT’s clarification effectively dismisses the claims of a cash seizure involving K. Selvaperunthagai as baseless. The development highlights the growing need for responsible dissemination of information, particularly in politically sensitive contexts, where misinformation can quickly escalate into public controversy.
