Under “Operation Fire Trail”, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has unearthed yet another large-scale smuggling attempt involving the illegal import of Chinese-origin fireworks and firecrackers at Nhava Sheva Port. This is the second major interception in recent weeks, following a similar seizure of Chinese firecrackers at Tuticorin Port.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a 40-foot container at Nhava Sheva Port, originating from China and declared as carrying “leggings.” The container was destined for ICD Ankleshwar. Upon detailed examination, officials discovered a sophisticated concealment of 46,640 pieces of fireworks and firecrackers, hidden behind a superficial layer of garments placed at the front. The total consignment, valued at ₹4.82 crore, was seized.
Subsequent search operations led to the recovery of incriminating documents exposing the smuggling syndicate’s modus operandi. A key individual involved in the racket was later arrested from Veraval, Gujarat, as part of the ongoing investigation.
Under the ITC (HS) Classification of the Foreign Trade Policy, the import of firecrackers is classified as ‘Restricted’, and such imports require valid licenses from both the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) in accordance with the Explosives Rules, 2008.
Authorities have warned that the unlawful import of hazardous goods like firecrackers poses serious risks to public safety, national security, port infrastructure, and the broader logistics chain.
