Justice B.R. Gavai to Assume Office as 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025.

In a historic development for India’s judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14, 2025, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Justice Gavai’s appointment is particularly significant as he will be the first CJI from the Scheduled Caste community in nearly two decades, marking a notable moment in the pursuit of inclusivity within the Indian judicial system. 

A Distinguished Judicial Career

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai embarked on his legal journey with a deep commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring justice for all. He began his judicial career with his appointment to the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003. Over the years, he earned a reputation for his judicious interpretations and unwavering dedication to the rule of law. His elevation to the Supreme Court of India came on May 24, 2019, where he continued to contribute significantly to the nation’s jurisprudence. 

Championing Judicial Independence and Integrity

Justice Gavai has consistently emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of the judiciary. In light of recent challenges, including allegations against members of the judiciary, he has advocated for robust mechanisms to safeguard judges from external pressures and political influences. He cautioned that without adequate protections, judges might feel compelled to seek political patronage, which could undermine the judiciary’s credibility.His commitment to preserving the sanctity of the judicial process underscores his readiness to lead the Supreme Court with vision and integrity.

As he prepares to assume the highest judicial office in the country, Justice Gavai is expected to focus on enhancing transparency, reducing case backlogs, and promoting access to justice for all segments of society. His tenure is anticipated to bring renewed vigor to the Supreme Court’s functioning, with an emphasis on timely justice delivery and reinforcing public trust in the legal system.
