Gold Recovered from Flight Arriving from Dubai
Acting on the tip-off, Customs officials conducted a thorough search of Emirates flight EK 514, which arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport from Dubai on September 21, 2026.
During the search, officials discovered gold concealed in the form of chains, which had been sprayed with silver and black colours. The gold was found hidden beneath two seats and packed inside three small bags.
The unusual method of concealment appears to have been designed to make the gold resemble ordinary jewellery or other metallic articles and thereby reduce the possibility of detection during airport checks.
The seized gold reportedly weighs approximately 6.5 kilograms and has an estimated value of around ₹9 crore.
Eight Passengers Arrested
Following the recovery, Customs officials intensified their investigation and identified passengers allegedly connected with the smuggling operation.
As part of the action, eight passengers, including a woman, who had arrived on the same flight were arrested in connection with the case.
The investigation indicates that the group had allegedly adopted a distinctive modus operandi for transporting gold from Dubai to India.
Travelling to Dubai Under the Pretext of Exhibitions
According to the preliminary findings, members of the group would frequently travel to Dubai on the pretext of attending exhibitions.
The investigation has further revealed that the accused allegedly used these trips to facilitate the transportation of gold back to India. Instead of concealing the gold in conventional ways, the group allegedly converted or carried it in the form of chains and jewellery and wore the articles on their persons.
The alleged strategy was based on the belief that gold worn as jewellery would attract comparatively less suspicion and could facilitate easier movement through the airport.
The Customs authorities are now examining the frequency of the group’s Dubai travel, the purpose declared for each visit, their financial transactions and the possible involvement of other persons or entities in the alleged smuggling network.
Unique Modus Operandi Under Scanner
The case has drawn attention because of the alleged manner in which the gold was transported.
Gold smuggling networks commonly attempt to conceal precious metal in luggage, clothing, electronic devices or other articles. In the present case, however, the accused allegedly relied on gold chains or jewellery as the mode of concealment, while the recovered articles had been sprayed with silver and black colours.
The authorities are investigating whether this technique was specifically developed by the group to disguise the appearance of gold and whether similar consignments had been transported through the same method on earlier occasions.
Accused Sent to Judicial Custody
After their arrest, the accused persons underwent the requisite medical examinations and were subsequently produced before the Patiala House Court in New Delhi.
The court has reportedly sent all eight accused to judicial custody for 14 days.
The judicial custody order follows the Customs authorities’ investigation into the alleged smuggling network and the circumstances surrounding the transportation of the seized gold.
Further Investigation Underway
The Customs investigation is continuing to determine the complete extent of the alleged conspiracy.
Investigators are expected to examine the accused persons’ travel history, communications, financial transactions and links with persons based in Dubai and India. Authorities are also likely to investigate whether the group had previously succeeded in transporting gold through the same modus operandi.
The source of the gold, the intended recipients in India and the persons allegedly financing or facilitating the operation are also likely to form part of the ongoing investigation.
The seizure of 6.5 kg of gold valued at approximately ₹9 crore and the arrest of eight passengers mark a significant action by Customs authorities against organised gold smuggling through the international airport.
Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and authorities work to uncover the entire network and conspiracy behind the alleged smuggling operation.
