The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, has issued Office Order No. 25/2026 dated February 25, 2026, promoting 95 officers to the grade of Assistant Commissioner of Customs & Indirect Taxes on an ad-hoc basis.

The promotions have been made in the Level 10 pay band with Grade Pay of ₹5400 (pre-revised), effective from 30 September 2025, and will continue until further orders. The ad-hoc appointments are against temporary posts created pursuant to cadre restructuring of CBEC (now CBIC) in 2013 for a period of five years, extended until 18 December 2027.

The Board has clarified that the promotions are purely ad-hoc and do not confer any right to regular promotion. The service rendered will not count towards seniority or qualifying service for further promotion. The appointments are subject to the outcome of SLP (C) No. 30621/2011 (Jamail Singh & Others vs. Lachhmi Narain Gupta & Others) and other connected matters pending before the Supreme Court. Promotions remain subject to decisions of the competent authority based on UPSC recommendations. Officers under suspension, facing disciplinary proceedings, or prosecution are not permitted to assume charge.

The ad-hoc promotions will be on an in-situ basis until regular postings are decided.
