In a major breakthrough against transnational gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled a sophisticated international syndicate in a high-stakes operation code-named “Operation Golden Sweep.” Acting on precise intelligence inputs, DRI officers intercepted multiple individuals at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport, Mumbai, leading to the seizure of 10.488 kilograms of foreign-origin 24-karat gold, valued at approximately ₹12.58 crore.
The crackdown resulted in the arrest of 13 individuals, including two Bangladeshi nationals, six Sri Lankans, two airport staff members employed with a meet-and-greet service, two handlers, and the key mastermind operating from Mumbai.
Sophisticated Modus Operandi Uncovered
Preliminary investigations have revealed a highly intricate smuggling network spanning multiple countries. The syndicate’s masterminds, based in Mumbai and Dubai, orchestrated a complex operation that exploited the vulnerabilities of international air transit routes.
Under this elaborate scheme, transit passengers traveling from Dubai to destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, and Dhaka via Mumbai were recruited as gold carriers. These passengers concealed gold inside egg-shaped wax capsules, which were hidden within their bodies to evade detection.
Upon arrival at the Mumbai airport, the carriers discreetly handed over the concealed gold to complicit airport staff working in the international departure area. The corrupt staff then smuggled the gold out of the airport’s secure zone and handed it over to handlers and receivers operating under the directions of the syndicate’s Mumbai-based mastermind.
DRI’s Coordinated Action
The operation, executed with precision and secrecy, underscores the DRI’s advanced intelligence-gathering capabilities and its ability to coordinate complex enforcement actions across agencies. “Operation Golden Sweep” marks a significant success in dismantling a well-organised transnational network that had deeply penetrated airport operations.
A Growing Insider Threat
The case also sheds light on the emerging insider threat within critical infrastructure such as airports. The involvement of airport personnel in facilitating smuggling highlights the need for enhanced vigilance and stronger internal security mechanisms to prevent the exploitation of legitimate airport services by organised criminal groups.
Ongoing Investigation
DRI officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on tracing the broader network of financiers, couriers, and foreign-based masterminds connected to the operation.
Reaffirming its commitment, a DRI spokesperson stated that the agency remains “steadfast in safeguarding India’s economic interests and national security against transnational criminal syndicates that seek to undermine the integrity of the nation’s trade and border systems.”
“Operation Golden Sweep” stands as a testament to DRI’s relentless pursuit of smugglers employing increasingly sophisticated tactics, and its continued success in protecting India from the economic and security risks posed by global smuggling cartels.
