From fine-dine to roadside dhabas, eateries across India must now display a QR code that lets customers instantly report food safety violations via the ‘Food Safety Connect’ app.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a nationwide directive mandating all Food Business Operators (FBOs) — including restaurants, dhabas, cafes, food trucks, and cloud kitchens — to prominently display the QR code of the ‘Food Safety Connect’ mobile app at their premises.
Whether you’re ordering biryani at a local eatery or sipping coffee at a plush café, customers will now have the power to instantly lodge complaints about unhygienic kitchens, stale food, or misleading labels — just by scanning a QR code.
What’s Changing?
FSSAI has embedded the QR code of the Food Safety Connect app on the front page of its License/Registration certificate. All food outlets are now legally required to place this certificate — with the QR — in visible areas like entrances, counters, or seating zones.
Online food businesses must also update their websites and delivery platforms with either the scannable QR code or a direct download link to the app.
What is the ‘Food Safety Connect’ App?
Developed by FSSAI, the app serves as a direct channel for consumer grievance redressal. Key features include:
- Lodging complaints about food safety and hygiene
- Reporting false or misleading food claims
- Accessing verified FBO license data
- Getting real-time food safety alerts and updates
All complaints filed through the app are automatically routed to the relevant local authorities, enabling faster action and less bureaucratic delay.
Why It Matters
This move aligns with Condition No. 1 of the FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, which requires businesses to maintain transparency and accountability in their operations.
FSSAI says the initiative will not only boost food safety surveillance but also empower consumers to take charge of what ends up on their plate.
“The goal is to build a culture of safe and healthy eating. A nation that eats safe, stays healthy,” FSSAI stated in its official release.

Failure to comply may lead to penalties, suspension, or cancellation of licenses under the FSSAI regulations.
