Noida Dowry Murder Case: Third Arrest as Victim’s Brother-in-Law Detained

The Noida Police have made another breakthrough in the sensational dowry murder case of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati. Authorities on Sunday confirmed the arrest of her brother-in-law, Rohit Bhati, making him the third family member to be taken into custody.

How the Case Unfolded

Nikki, married to Vipin Bhati since December 2016, had reportedly faced relentless harassment over dowry. Her in-laws initially demanded a Scorpio car, later a Bullet motorcycle, and eventually cash worth nearly ₹36 lakh. Despite multiple interventions by family elders and local panchayats, the abuse allegedly continued.

On the night of the incident, Nikki was doused with inflammable liquid and set ablaze inside her in-laws’ residence. A disturbing video captured her running down the stairs engulfed in flames before collapsing. Her six-year-old son also witnessed the attack.

Arrests So Far

  • Vipin Bhati (husband) – The prime accused was arrested earlier this month after attempting to flee. During police questioning, he shockingly denied guilt, saying his wife “died on her own.” He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
  • Daya Bhati (mother-in-law) – Taken into custody soon after Vipin, she faces charges of aiding and abetting the crime.
  • Rohit Bhati (brother-in-law) – Apprehended on Sunday, Rohit is being interrogated for his alleged role in the conspiracy and cover-up.

Testimony and Public Anger

Nikki’s father has demanded strict punishment for the accused, even calling for their house to be demolished and for the culprits to face the harshest legal consequences. Public outrage has intensified as chilling details emerged from Nikki’s young son, who told investigators:

“Meri mummy ke upar kuch dala, unko thappad maara aur lighter se aag laga di.”
(“They poured something on my mother, slapped her, and then set her on fire with a lighter.”)

Why This Case Matters

The gruesome murder has once again highlighted India’s deep-rooted dowry crisis, where young women continue to face violence and death over unfulfilled demands. Women’s rights activists have urged authorities to fast-track the trial and ensure the family receives justice.
