Key Changes in Tariff Values
The revised tariff values, notified under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, 1962, replace the earlier values prescribed under Notification No. 36/2001-Customs (N.T.).
1. Edible Oils and Brass Scrap (Table 1)
The government has updated tariff values (in USD per metric tonne) for the following:
- Crude Palm Oil: $1174
- RBD Palm Oil: $1195
- Other Palm Oil: $1185
- Crude Palmolein: $1199
- RBD Palmolein: $1202
- Other Palmolein: $1201
- Crude Soyabean Oil: $1252
- Brass Scrap (all grades): $6971
These revisions reflect changes in global commodity prices and are aimed at aligning import valuation with prevailing international rates.
2. Precious Metals – Gold and Silver (Table 2)
Tariff values for precious metals have also been revised:
- Gold: $1544 per 10 grams
- Silver: $2509 per kilogram
The notification further clarifies applicability for different forms of gold and silver, including coins, bars, and semi-manufactured forms, with specific exclusions such as jewellery and certain imports via courier or baggage.
3. Areca Nuts (Table 3)
- Areca Nuts: $9155 per metric tonne
The revision has been carried out under powers conferred by Section 14 of the Customs Act, enabling the government to fix tariff values for imported goods where necessary. These values serve as a reference point for calculating customs duties, particularly in cases where transaction values may be unreliable or prone to manipulation.
The current amendment replaces the earlier tables and continues the government’s practice of periodically updating tariff values to curb under-invoicing and protect domestic markets.
