The Income Tax Department has categorically denied allegations that its officials conducted any search operation or unlawfully confined a political leader in Tamil Nadu, calling such claims “entirely baseless and factually incorrect.”

The clarification comes in response to a social media post dated April 20, 2026, and subsequent media reports suggesting that enforcement action was taken under the guise of a search.

In an official press release issued on April 21, 2026, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) stated that no search, survey, or any enforcement action was carried out against the individual on the said date or in the recent past. The Department further clarified that no steps were taken that could have restricted the movement of the individual, nor were any premises, including his residence in Chennai, covered under any Income Tax proceedings.

The Department noted that while certain verification exercises were undertaken in parts of Sriperumbudur, these were routine in nature and based on specific intelligence inputs regarding suspected movement of unaccounted cash. Such activities were conducted in coordination with relevant authorities and were not connected to the individual in question. Importantly, these verifications did not yield any findings warranting further action.

Rejecting the allegations as misleading, the Department emphasized that the claims had no factual basis and were not supported by any evidence. It also stated that the matter has been reported to the Election Commission of India.

Additionally, a formal complaint has been lodged with the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, seeking appropriate legal action for dissemination of false information and making defamatory allegations against a government department. The Department reiterated its commitment to transparency and urged the public to rely on verified information.
