The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), Mumbai Bench has announced that it will commence hearing cases with effect from July 27, 2026

The announcement was made through Public Notice No. 04/2026, dated July 24, 2026, issued by the Deputy Registrar of the GSTAT, Mumbai Bench.

The commencement of hearings marks another important milestone in the operationalization of the long-awaited GST Appellate Tribunal, providing taxpayers, businesses, and tax authorities with a dedicated appellate forum for adjudication of GST disputes.

According to the public notice, the GSTAT Mumbai Bench will start hearing matters from July 27, 2026. The notice has been issued for the information of all stakeholders, including taxpayers; competent departmental authorities; authorized representatives; tax practitioners; and other stakeholders involved in GST litigation.

The Tribunal has clarified that all listed matters before the Mumbai Bench will now be taken up in accordance with the hearing schedule commencing from the notified date.

To facilitate transparency and ease of access, the Tribunal has informed stakeholders that the daily cause list of matters listed before the Mumbai Bench will be published on the GSTAT e-filing portal under the “Cause List” tab.

The notice advises taxpayers, advocates, chartered accountants, departmental officers, and authorized representatives to regularly monitor the portal for updates regarding the listing of their respective cases.

The online publication of cause lists is expected to streamline case management and enable litigants to track hearing schedules without requiring physical verification.

The commencement of hearings by the Mumbai Bench is expected to significantly strengthen the GST dispute resolution framework. Since the introduction of GST in 2017, taxpayers have often faced prolonged litigation due to the delayed establishment of the appellate tribunal, compelling many assessees to approach High Courts for issues that would ordinarily fall within the Tribunal’s jurisdiction.

With the Tribunal becoming operational, taxpayers will now have access to a specialized appellate forum for challenging orders passed by the First Appellate Authority under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and corresponding State GST laws.

The public notice states that it has been issued with the approval of the Hon’ble Vice President, GSTAT Maharashtra and Goa, underscoring the official commencement of judicial functioning of the Mumbai Bench.

Copies of the public notice have been circulated to several key authorities and institutions, including the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court; finance Departments of Maharashtra and Goa; Principal Chief Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Mumbai Zone;

  • Chief Commissioner of CGST and Customs, Pune Zone;
  • Commissioners of State Tax of Maharashtra and Goa;
  • Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA);
  • Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI);
  • Trade and industry associations; and
  • Authorized representatives, tax bar associations, and legal practitioners.

Copies have also been forwarded to the President of GSTAT, the Vice President (Maharashtra & Goa), the Principal Bench at New Delhi, and other State Benches of the Tribunal.
