The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remitting statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026 from October 15 to October 31, 2026. The extension follows difficulties reported by employers in updating payroll systems after a revision of the wage ceiling, according to a circular dated October 13, 2026.

The relief covers both submission of the ECR and payment of the corresponding statutory contributions. Establishments may complete these requirements on or before October 31, subject to compliance with the applicable statutory provisions and schemes.

According to the circular, the revision of the wage ceiling with effect from September 17, 2026 required covered establishments to modify their payroll systems and statutory compliance processes to ensure correct computation of wages and provident fund and allied contributions.

EPFO received multiple representations from employers, establishments and other stakeholders highlighting difficulties in preparing and submitting the ECR. Since the revision took effect during September, employers had to adjust pay bills, payroll configurations, employee-wise contribution calculations and related records.

The circular records that these changes created technical, operational and administrative challenges, particularly for compliance relating to the September 2026 wage month. The extension is intended to give establishments reasonable time to complete the necessary payroll revisions, resolve the reported difficulties and correctly remit statutory contributions.

The competent authority granted the extension in exercise of the powers conferred on the Central Provident Fund Commissioner under the second proviso to paragraph 28(3) of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952.

EPFO has expressly clarified that the extension applies exclusively to ECR filing and remittance of statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026. It does not extend deadlines for any other wage month or dispense with other statutory obligations.

All field offices have been directed to inform establishments within their jurisdictions about the revised deadline and take necessary steps to facilitate compliance in accordance with the circular.
