Customs officers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport, under Mumbai Customs Zone-III, have thwarted an attempt to smuggle exotic wildlife into the country. A passenger returning from Bangkok was arrested after officials discovered live wild animals concealed in his baggage.

According to officials, the seizure included two kinkajous, two pygmy marmosets, and fifty albino red-eared slider turtles—all species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The wildlife was found hidden in a manner intended to evade customs detection.

The passenger, identified as Sharukkhan Mohammed Hassian, was apprehended under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, read with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Officials emphasised that such smuggling attempts pose serious threats to biodiversity and animal welfare. “These animals often suffer extreme distress during illegal transport, and many do not survive the journey,” a customs spokesperson said.

The accused is in custody, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the animals. Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on wildlife trafficking and urged travellers to be aware of stringent legal provisions against such offences.
