The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Customs seized 2.4 kilograms of hydroponic ganja valued at approximately ₹1.2 crore late on the night of June 12, 2025.
The seizure was made from a passenger who arrived from Bangkok at the Chennai International Airport.
Based on specific intelligence inputs and risk profiling, Customs officials intercepted the suspect upon arrival. A detailed examination of his baggage led to the recovery of the contraband, concealed skillfully in vacuum-sealed packets designed to evade detection.
Hydroponic ganja, also known as “top-shelf weed,” is a high-grade variant cultivated using soil-free techniques, often in controlled indoor environments. Its high THC content and demand in the illicit market have made it a preferred choice among drug traffickers.
Customs officials confirmed that the seized narcotics were smuggled with the intent to distribute in India, where the substance fetches a significantly higher price.
The passenger has been detained under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigations are underway to uncover the larger network behind the smuggling attempt.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to curbing narcotics trafficking and enhancing surveillance at international transit points.
