In a significant seizure, customs officials at Chennai International Airport recovered ten high-end drones from an abandoned piece of baggage left behind by a passenger arriving from Sharjah. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, raising concerns over potential smuggling attempts of surveillance-capable equipment.

According to sources within the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), officers noticed an unclaimed black trolley bag near the baggage belt in the arrival hall. Upon inspection, they discovered ten drones neatly packed in retail boxes. The recovered items are suspected to be high-specification unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) intended for unauthorized commercial or surveillance purposes.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the passenger may have deliberately abandoned the bag to avoid customs scrutiny. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and airline records to identify the individual responsible for bringing the baggage into the country.

The value of the drones is estimated to be in several lakhs of rupees. Since drones are classified as restricted imports under Indian law, bringing them into the country without prior permission from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and a valid import license is prohibited.

Customs officials have seized the drones under relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and further investigation is underway to determine whether this is part of a larger smuggling network.

The incident underscores growing concerns about the use of unregulated drones, particularly in urban and high-security zones. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tightening security protocols at international entry points and cracking down on attempts to bypass import regulations.
