In a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking, Customs officials at Madurai International Airport intercepted a female passenger attempting to smuggle thousands of exotic wildlife species into India. Acting on specific intelligence, officers recovered 3,101 red-eared slider turtles concealed inside the passenger’s check-in baggage.
According to an official press release issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Tiruchirappalli, the intelligence indicated that the passenger would arrive from Kuala Lumpur to Madurai via Colombo on December 13, 2025, carrying contraband wildlife. Based on this input, Customs officers maintained surveillance and intercepted the passenger upon arrival on Flight UL-139.
During a detailed examination of the check-in baggage, officers discovered a large number of live exotic turtles concealed in a manner intended to evade detection. The seized species — red-eared slider turtles — are classified as exotic wildlife and are subject to strict regulatory controls under Indian law.
Customs authorities have booked the case under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, read with the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The accused passenger has been arrested, and further investigation into the smuggling network and possible international linkages is currently underway.
Officials confirmed that the rescued wildlife species have been repatriated in accordance with prescribed procedures, underscoring India’s commitment to combating illegal wildlife trade and protecting biodiversity.
The operation highlights heightened vigilance by Customs authorities against the rising trend of cross-border wildlife smuggling, particularly involving exotic species trafficked through international air routes.
