In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, the Customs department at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI), Mumbai, seized 12.26 kg of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana) valued at approximately ₹12.26 crore in the illicit market.
The operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence, when officers intercepted a passenger who had arrived from Kuala Lumpur by flight MH194 on September 3, 2025. Upon examination of the baggage, officials discovered the narcotic substance concealed inside a checked-in trolley bag.
According to Customs officials, the hydroponic weed was skillfully hidden to evade detection. However, the alertness of officers led to the successful recovery of the contraband.
The passenger has been arrested under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source, destination, and possible involvement of larger syndicates in the smuggling attempt.
Hydroponic weed, often cultivated using advanced indoor farming techniques, is considered a high-grade variety of marijuana and commands a steep price in the illegal market.
Authorities at CSMI Airport have intensified surveillance measures as part of their ongoing efforts to curb narcotics trafficking through international routes.
