The officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahemdabad intercepted a passenger arriving from Malaysia and seized 9.3 kilograms of heroin ingeniously concealed inside food packets carried in his hand baggage.

Suspicion Raised During X-Ray Screening

According to official sources, the passenger was intercepted after Customs officers noticed suspicious images during X-ray screening of the hand baggage. The unusual density and appearance of certain food packets prompted officers to subject the baggage to a detailed physical examination.

Upon opening the packets, Customs officials discovered a white powdery substance hidden within the packaging. Preliminary testing confirmed that the substance was heroin, a prohibited narcotic drug under Indian law.

Seizure Worth Several Crores in Illegal Market

The total quantity of heroin recovered was approximately 9.3 kilograms. Given the high street value of heroin in international illicit markets, the seizure is estimated to be worth several crores of rupees.

The narcotics were carefully concealed to evade detection, reflecting the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by drug trafficking syndicates.

Passenger Arrested Under NDPS Act

The passenger was immediately placed under arrest under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act).

Under the NDPS Act, trafficking of commercial quantities of heroin carries stringent punishment, including rigorous imprisonment of up to 20 years and substantial monetary fines.

Investigation Underway

Customs authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine:

  • The origin and intended destination of the narcotics.
  • The role of the arrested passenger.
  • Possible links to international drug trafficking networks.
  • Whether any local contacts or accomplices were involved.

Officials are also examining the passenger’s travel history, communication records, and financial transactions to uncover the broader conspiracy.

Customs Intensifies Vigil Against Drug Smuggling

The seizure underscores the heightened vigilance maintained by Customs authorities at international airports across India. Enhanced passenger profiling, advanced X-ray systems, and intelligence-based operations have led to a series of major narcotics busts in recent months.

Officials reiterated that strict action will continue against individuals and syndicates attempting to use Indian airports as transit points for smuggling drugs.

Growing Concern Over Concealment in Everyday Items

Drug traffickers increasingly use ordinary consumer products such as food packets, chocolates, toiletries, and garments to disguise narcotics. Customs officers are trained to identify subtle anomalies in packaging and imaging scans, enabling timely detection.

Official Statement

Customs officials stated that the passenger arriving from Malaysia was intercepted on the basis of suspicious X-ray images of his hand baggage. Detailed examination resulted in the recovery and seizure of 9.3 kilograms of heroin concealed inside food packets. The passenger has been arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985, and further investigation is in progress.

The successful operation once again highlights the critical role played by Customs officers in safeguarding the country against the menace of international drug trafficking.
