Udaipur Administration Intensifies GST Scrutiny, Focuses on Revenue Recovery

In a significant move to bolster state revenue, the Udaipur administration is cracking down on Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance, particularly within government departments and related sectors. Leveraging transaction records and GST data, the Commercial Tax Department is undertaking detailed scrutiny, anticipating over 50 potential actions.

The primary focus areas for this intensified GST monitoring include:

  • Agricultural Mandis (Markets): Special attention is being paid to the reverse charge mechanism applicable to soybean, oilseeds, and spices. Authorities are comparing mandi records of supplies with the GST paid by traders to identify discrepancies.
  • Mining Department: GST liabilities at three key stages of mineral activity are under the scanner: royalty payments on government land mining, sales by miners in the market, and payments made to dumper and transporters.
  • Public Works Department (PWD), Building Corporation, and RDC: With an 18% GST rate applicable to construction work and materials, the department is verifying if contractors have deposited the remaining 16% after accounting for their initial input tax credit.

According to Dhanraju S, the Commercial Tax Commissioner, teams are working collaboratively across various government departments to gather transaction data and formulate a robust revenue recovery plan.

Udaipur Focuses on Infrastructure and Development Projects

In other significant developments for the Udaipur region, several key projects and demands have been highlighted:

  • Kan River Purification: A substantial allocation of ₹635 crore has been proposed for the purification of the Kan River in the fiscal year 2025-26. This demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability in the region. Earlier samples from the river were sent to Pune for analysis, with reports indicating no changes, raising concerns as both involved firms reportedly have the same proprietor, against whom the administration has initiated action.
  • Water Supply Augmentation: A demand for ₹743.08 crore has been put forth to enhance the water supply infrastructure in Udaipur. This significant investment aims to cater to the growing needs of the city and ensure better access to potable water for its residents.
  • Comprehensive Development of 29 Newly Included Villages: A survey is underway to formulate a special package for the holistic development of the 29 villages recently incorporated within the Udaipur municipal limits. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and extending urban amenities to these newly integrated areas. The specific details and financial implications of this package are expected to emerge following the completion of the ongoing survey.

These multi-pronged efforts by the Udaipur administration, focusing on both revenue enhancement through stringent GST compliance and significant investments in crucial infrastructure projects, signal a strong push towards comprehensive development and improved governance in the region. The focus on environmental concerns with the Kan River project and inclusive growth with the development plan for the new villages highlight a balanced approach towards progress.
