GST Portal Not Working

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) portal, maintained by Infosys, has reportedly been non-functional since morning, leaving thousands of taxpayers, dealers, and professionals across India struggling to file their GSTR-1 returns. The outage, which began early Tuesday, has led to widespread frustration in the tax community as deadlines approach.

Tax professionals and trade bodies have flooded social media platforms with complaints, tagging @Infosys_GSTN and the GST Helpdesk, demanding immediate restoration of services and clear communication from authorities. Many users have reported being unable to log in, upload invoices, or complete return filings due to persistent system errors and timeouts.

“The portal is not working since morning. Thousands of man-hours are being wasted as dealers and professionals keep trying to file GSTR-1 in vain. If the portal is down due to any reason, the least that can be done is to communicate promptly,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The issue has once again reignited debate over the reliability of the GSTN infrastructure, developed and maintained by Infosys under a government contract. Over the past few years, similar outages have been reported during return filing deadlines, leading to delays, penalty concerns, and operational inefficiencies for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Despite repeated complaints, neither Infosys nor GSTN had issued any official update or downtime notice as of Tuesday evening, further adding to taxpayer anxiety. Industry associations have urged the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to consider extending filing deadlines in light of the outage.

Tax practitioners say the repeated downtime not only hampers compliance but also undermines the government’s efforts toward digital governance and ease of doing business. “Every minute the portal remains down translates into financial and productivity losses for thousands of firms. Communication and transparency are the least expectations,” said a senior GST consultant based in Mumbai.

The GSTN portal is the backbone of India’s indirect tax administration, handling millions of return filings, data validations, and invoice uploads every month. With the GSTR-1 due date approaching for September filings, users have urged authorities to take urgent steps to restore functionality and issue a formal statement clarifying the cause of the disruption.
