The Goods and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has successfully conducted the first hearing of a GST appeal, marking a long-awaited milestone in the operationalisation of the appellate mechanism under the GST regime.

According to an official communication issued by the GST Appellate Tribunal on December 24, 2025, the hearing was virtually held on December 18, 2025, before the Principal Bench of the GSTAT, presided over by the President of the Tribunal. This inaugural hearing represents a critical step towards strengthening the appellate structure envisaged under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.

The Tribunal further noted that efforts are underway to conclude the hearing on December 26, 2025, reflecting an emphasis on expeditious disposal of appeals and reducing pendency in GST disputes.

Long-Awaited Appellate Forum Becomes Functional

The GST Appellate Tribunal occupies a pivotal position in the GST dispute resolution hierarchy, serving as the forum for appeals against orders passed by Appellate Authorities under GST laws. Despite statutory backing since the inception of GST in 2017, the absence of a functional tribunal had compelled taxpayers and the Revenue alike to approach High Courts for relief, often leading to increased litigation costs and procedural delays.

The commencement of hearings by the Principal Bench signals that the Tribunal is now moving towards full operational readiness, potentially easing the burden on constitutional courts and providing taxpayers with a specialised fact-finding appellate forum.
