CA Caught Red-Handed Taking Rs. 10 Lakh Bribe on Behalf of CGST Officer

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a chartered accountant (CA) while allegedly accepting a Rs. 10 lakh bribe on behalf of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer serving as Assistant Commissioner in the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department, Jalandhar.

The arrested individual has been identified as Gursewak Singh, a resident of Jalandhar.

The local businessman alleged that the chartered accountant had demanded Rs. 30 lakh as a bribe to secure favourable treatment for his company in an ongoing investigation under the CGST Act.

Following a preliminary verification of the complaint, a Vigilance Bureau flying squad laid a trap and apprehended Gursewak Singh while he was receiving the first installment of Rs. 10 lakh from the complainant. The operation was conducted in the presence of two independent witnesses.

The role of the CGST Assistant Commissioner, an IRS officer, is currently under scrutiny based on disclosures made by the arrested accused.

An FIR has been registered against Gursewak Singh under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), at the VB Flying Squad-1 Police Station in Mohali.

The Vigilance Bureau has confirmed that the accused will be presented before the court and further investigation is ongoing.
