In a rare and commendable operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended two private individuals for offering and paying a bribe of Rs. 22 lakh to a Superintendent in the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI).
According to the CBI press release, the Superintendent, who was conducting an inquiry into alleged tax evasion by several online companies, was approached by the accused with an offer to favor them in exchange for a hefty bribe. Demonstrating exceptional integrity and adherence to ethical standards, the officer promptly reported the matter to the CBI, triggering a meticulously planned “reverse trap” operation.
The Reverse Trap Operation
Unlike conventional trap cases where government officials are caught red-handed while accepting bribes, this rare instance involved private individuals being nabbed while attempting to bribe a public servant.
The CBI’s operation culminated in the successful apprehension of the two accused as they were offering and paying the bribe to the complainant officer.
Searches Underway
Following the arrests, CBI teams have launched extensive searches at multiple locations linked to the accused. These raids are aimed at uncovering further evidence connected not only to the bribery attempt but also to the larger tax evasion scheme under investigation.
Integrity of Public Servants Highlighted
The incident shines a spotlight on the critical role of honest public servants in the fight against corruption. The GST Intelligence officer’s swift action and commitment to duty have been hailed as exemplary.
“The public servants’ resolute commitment to their duty serves as an important example in the ongoing fight against corrupt practices,” the CBI said in its statement.
