55th GST Council Meet: All Eyes On GST Rate On Online Food Delivery Charges

The 55th GST Council Meeting is chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, which is likely to decide on a GST rate cut on online Food delivery charges.

If the Council approves the recommendations made by the GST Council nominated fitment committee, the GST rate on food delivery charges while ordering food via e-commerce platforms like Swiggy, Zomato is most likely to be reduced from 18% to 5%.

TheGST rate cut, which could take effect from Jan. 1, 2025, would not allow food delivery platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy to claim tax credits.

The government tweeted that a customer buying from an online platform like Zomato will normally pay 5% on food, 5% on packing charges, 18% on platform fee and 18% on delivery charges (which is not levied for gold card members).
