Karimganj Customs Seizes Smuggled Foreign Cigarettes Worth ₹1.49 Crore in Assam

In a significant crackdown on cross-border smuggling, officers of the Karimganj Customs Division, with active support from the Border Security Force (BSF) G-Branch, seized 6.7 lakh sticks of smuggled foreign-origin cigarettes from a truck in Cachar district, Assam, on April 29, 2025.

The seizure, which comprised 67 cartons of contraband cigarettes, is valued at approximately Rs. 1.49 crore in the illicit market. The operation marks a major success in the fight against tobacco smuggling in the sensitive Indo-Bangladesh border region.

The truck was intercepted based on specific intelligence inputs indicating the movement of illegal foreign cigarettes through Assam. The swift joint action by Customs and BSF personnel led to the interception and seizure without incident. Further investigation is underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the consignment.
