The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has notified amendments in the import policy concerning Channa (chickpeas). The latest notification grants key exemptions aimed at reducing the financial burden on importers.

As per the revised policy, the CBIC has exempted Channa from the levy of Social Welfare Surcharge, which is typically imposed on customs duties to fund social welfare initiatives. Additionally, the import of Channa will not attract the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC), a charge generally applied to bolster agricultural infrastructure and development.

The decision is expected to provide relief to importers and consumers alike, ensuring stable pricing and availability in the domestic market. These amendments align with the government’s broader strategy to regulate essential commodity imports effectively while balancing the needs of agricultural development and trade facilitation.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, anticipating a positive impact on market dynamics and cost efficiency. Further details on the implementation of these exemptions are awaited in the official CBIC circular.
