The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now investigating the gold smuggling network at airports after Ranya Rao’s arrest.
The CBI is working closely with the DRI to uncover links between smugglers and corrupt officials facilitating gold smuggling at major Indian airports.
Officials have confirmed that two CBI teams have been deployed to Bengaluru and Mumbai airports to investigate the case further. Authorities suspect a larger smuggling network involving public servants, including customs and police officials, may be at play.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against gold smugglers operating through various Indian airports, following the arrest of Kannada actress Ranya Rao at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. Rao was caught with 14.2 kg of undeclared gold worth ₹12.56 crore while returning from Dubai.
Ranya Rao’s Family Connection Raises Eyebrows
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted and arrested Ranya Rao on Monday night, leading to a deeper investigation into gold smuggling networks. Reports indicate that Rao confessed to possessing 17 gold bars, valued at ₹12.56 crore, during questioning. Further searches at her residence uncovered gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and Indian currency totaling ₹2.67 crore, bringing the total seizure to ₹17.29 crore.
Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of Karnataka’s Director General of Police (DGP) K Ramachandra Rao. Her stepfather currently serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. The connection has added another layer of scrutiny to the case.
