The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) superintendent and a consultant in connection with an alleged bribery demand of ₹1 crore for issuing a no-objection certificate and handing over government-owned flats for redevelopment.

The agency registered the case on September 9, 2026, against the superintendent and other unidentified persons following a complaint submitted by the project head of a private real estate company operating in New Panvel.

Bribe Allegedly Demanded for Redevelopment NOC

The private company had undertaken a project involving the redevelopment of two buildings situated in Sector 17, New Panvel. Of the flats forming part of the project, 24 were owned by the CGST and Central Excise, Raigad Commissionerate.

The CBI stated that the necessary approvals for the redevelopment project had already been obtained from the competent local authority.

Despite this, the superintendent allegedly demanded ₹1 crore from the real estate company for issuing the required NOC and facilitating the handing over of the government-owned flats for redevelopment.

₹10 Lakh Cash and ₹20 Lakh Flat Down Payment Alleged

During verification of the complaint, the accused officer allegedly specified how the ₹1 crore payment was to be made.

The CBI claimed that the superintendent demanded ₹10 lakh in cash on September 10, 2026. He allegedly also sought ₹20 lakh towards the down payment of a flat purchased by him.

The remaining ₹70 lakh was allegedly demanded for other officers posted at the Directorate General of Human Resource Development, CGST, New Delhi.

These allegations remain subject to investigation and determination by the competent court.

CBI Lays Trap

Acting on the verified complaint, the CBI laid a trap on September 10, 2026.

The superintendent allegedly instructed the complainant to hand over the ₹10 lakh illegal gratification to a CGST consultant who was present at the designated location.

Following the alleged transaction, the CBI arrested both the superintendent and the consultant on September 10.

Court Grants Two Days’ Police Custody

The two accused were produced before the competent court on September 11, 2026. The court granted the CBI two days’ police custody of both accused persons.

The investigating agency is expected to examine the alleged role of other persons and verify the claim that a substantial portion of the demanded amount was meant for other CGST officials.

The CBI said that further investigation into the bribery allegations is underway.
