Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant on Friday strongly refuted media reports claiming that the Supreme Court had declined an urgent hearing on a petition challenging police action against protesters associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), clarifying that no such petition had ever been filed before the Court.

The clarification came during court proceedings after certain reports suggested that the Chief Justice had refused to entertain an urgent plea concerning alleged police action against students and protesters participating in demonstrations linked to the CJP movement.

Addressing the issue in open court, CJI Surya Kant stated that the reports were “reckless” and based on incorrect information. He emphasized that the Supreme Court had not received any petition on the subject, making it impossible for the Court to either accept or reject an urgent listing request.

“Not a Single Page Was Filed”

The Chief Justice categorically observed that not a single page of any petition had been presented before the Registry or the Bench. Consequently, reports suggesting that the Court had declined to hear the matter were factually incorrect.

His remarks sought to dispel speculation surrounding the judiciary’s response to the protests and underscored that judicial proceedings can only commence once a properly instituted petition is filed before the Court.

Clarification Amid Ongoing Protests

The clarification comes against the backdrop of nationwide demonstrations led by the CJP over alleged examination paper leaks and related issues. Reports of detentions and police action during recent protests had triggered widespread public debate, with some media outlets claiming that an urgent challenge had failed before the Supreme Court.

However, the Chief Justice’s statement makes clear that the Court has not yet been called upon to adjudicate any such challenge, as no formal proceedings have been initiated.
