The Mizoram Government has launched a statewide crackdown on fraudulent Goods and Services Tax (GST) registrations after detecting multiple cases where registrations were allegedly secured using forged documents, fabricated information, and unauthorized use of property details.

The State Taxation Department announced that a comprehensive verification exercise had uncovered several suspicious GST registration applications. During the scrutiny, officials found that many applicants had submitted documents that could not be verified, while several registered business addresses were found to have no actual commercial activity during physical inspections.

A particularly concerning trend identified by the department involved GST registrations allegedly obtained using the names, addresses, and property details of individuals without their knowledge or consent. The authorities indicated that such fraudulent practices pose significant risks not only to genuine property owners but also to the integrity of the GST compliance framework.

According to the department, the irregularities were detected through a combination of risk-based assessment mechanisms, advanced data analytics, and field-level inspections conducted across the state. These verification measures enabled officials to identify registrations that appeared to have been created using false or misleading information.

Following the findings, the department has initiated legal proceedings against those responsible under the provisions of the Mizoram Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. Authorities stated that strict enforcement action would be taken against individuals or entities found to have obtained GST registrations through fraudulent means.

The department has also issued a public advisory urging citizens, landlords, property owners, and business establishments to remain vigilant while sharing personal and business-related information. It cautioned against providing identity documents, residential or commercial addresses, mobile numbers, email addresses, consent letters, or rental agreements without first verifying the legitimacy of the person or entity requesting such information.

Property owners have been specifically advised to exercise due diligence before signing consent letters or executing rental agreements intended for GST registration purposes. Officials warned that failure to verify the credentials of applicants could result in the unauthorized use of their property details in fraudulent GST registrations.

The taxation department has further appealed to members of the public to immediately report any suspected misuse of identity documents, unauthorized use of property addresses, or suspicious GST registration activities. It emphasized that public cooperation is essential to detecting tax fraud, protecting genuine taxpayers, and preserving the integrity of the GST registration system.

The statewide verification drive reflects the government’s increased focus on curbing GST-related fraud through technology-driven risk assessment, physical verification of business premises, and stronger enforcement against fake registrations. Authorities indicated that similar verification exercises and enforcement actions will continue as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax compliance and prevent misuse of the GST framework.
