The Delhi High Court on Wednesday heard petitions seeking an extension of the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing due date for Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26, including the case Sumit Garg vs. CBDT & Anr. (WP (C) 14882/2025).

During the hearing, counsel representing the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) informed the Court that the issue of extending the deadline is under active consideration by the authorities. The counsel further submitted that the recent Gujarat High Court judgment dated 13.10.2025, which addressed similar concerns, is also being examined by the department before taking any final decision.

Taking note of the submissions, the Delhi High Court granted additional time to the CBDT to clarify its stand. The matter has now been listed for further hearing on 29 October 2025.

The outcome of this case is being closely watched by taxpayers, professionals, and industry bodies, who have been requesting an extension citing technical issues, compliance burden, and recent changes in the return filing process.
