Delhi Bar Council  Warns ‘Reel Lawyers’ and Legal Influencers for Online Advertising

The Bar Council of Delhi has issued a stern notice warning lawyers, particularly those active as “reel makers” and self-styled legal influencers, against advertising their legal services on social media platforms. The directive comes in response to a rising trend of advocates promoting themselves online through content aimed at soliciting clients—an act deemed unethical under professional conduct rules.

The circular, signed by Surya Prakash Khatri, Chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi, notes that many lawyers have been using personal interactions, video content, client images, and even circulars to attract business. The Bar Council called this behavior a clear violation of Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules, which strictly prohibits advocates from advertising or canvassing for legal work.

Highlighting the “steep rise” in digital misconduct, the Bar Council expressed particular concern over influencers without valid legal credentials who are spreading misinformation on critical legal issues. Such actions not only mislead the public but also damage the credibility of the legal profession, the notice stated.

“Any violation amounts to serious misconduct and can result in suspension or cancellation of an advocate’s license under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961,” the notice warned. Advocates found violating the rules may face disciplinary proceedings.

All advocates involved in such social media activity have been directed to immediately remove any promotional content. Failure to comply may invite strict action under the provisions of the Advocates Act.
