Subramanya Vishwanath Rayaprol, an accomplished legal professional with over three decades of diverse experience in law, taxation, and corporate governance, has been appointed as a Judicial Member of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).
A mathematics graduate from Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, and a law graduate from Saurashtra University, Rajkot, Shri Rayaprol began his career in 1994 with the Department of Customs & Central Excise. Over the next 13 years, he served in various capacities — Inspector, Preventive Officer, and Intelligence Officer — across Gujarat, before transitioning into legal practice in 2007.
That year, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Gujarat, Ahmedabad, and established Subramanya Law Company, a firm dedicated to helping SMEs and MSMEs navigate the complexities of indirect tax law. Known for his scholarly approach and passion for continuous learning, Shri Rayaprol has since expanded his expertise into multiple domains.
An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta’s Executive Program on Corporate Regulations, he is also a Registered Foreign Lawyer with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (England & Wales) for advising on Indian laws. His credentials include being a certified Independent Director with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), an expert in corporate governance and ESG, and having completed specialized programs on Financial Intelligence for Directors (IICA) and Artificial Intelligence for Professionals (IIT Bombay, April 2025).
His contributions to the corporate and legal community have earned him notable recognition, including the Inspiring Board Director of the Year – 2024 award from the World Development Corporation (WDC) and the World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME) in January 2025.
A prolific writer, Shri Rayaprol regularly contributes to tax publications and maintains his own blog, www.slawco.in, where he shares insights on law, policy, and governance. His debut book, “Tax, Trade and Triumph – A Smart Guide to Business Success in India & Beyond”, is slated for release in August 2025.
Fluent in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Telugu, he is regarded for his versatility in communication and his deep expertise in areas including Customs, GST, Central Excise, Foreign Trade Policy, Insolvency and Bankruptcy, Company Law, Corporate Governance, Real Estate and Land Laws, and Environmental & Social Governance.
With his appointment, the GSTAT is expected to gain from his vast experience, multidimensional expertise, and commitment to strengthening the legal and tax framework in India.
