The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Union of India and other respondents in a petition alleging that a university misrepresented its law program as an LLB (Hons.) degree but awarded only a regular LLB upon completion.
The petition, filed by Nipun Gupta, claims that the university consistently portrayed the course as an LLB (Hons.)program. The petitioner’s identity card and other official documents also described the program as LLB (Hons.), leading students to believe they were enrolled in an honours course.
However, upon completion, the degree awarded was merely titled LLB, prompting the petitioner to challenge the university’s conduct before the High Court.
According to the petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Nikhil Ghai, the university’s representations, prospectus, and official materials all described the course as an honours program, which had a direct bearing on students’ academic and career prospects.
When confronted, the university reportedly defended its actions by calling the mention of “Hons.” a typographical error in the prospectus and related documents. The petitioner, however, argues that this explanation is insufficient given the repeated and consistent references to the course as LLB (Hons.).
A Division Bench of Justice Lisa Gill and Justice Parmod Goyal has issued notice of motion in the matter and scheduled the case for December 16, 2025.
