The Supreme Court Collegium has decided to repatriate Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent Allahabad High Court. The decision follows a fire at the judge’s residence, which allegedly led to the recovery of a substantial amount of cash by firefighters.

The Collegium, in a rare move, held two separate meetings on March 20 and March 24 before making the recommendation. “The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad,” read the official statement published on the Supreme Court’s website.

Justice Yashwant Varma, born in 1969, obtained his LL.B. from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and enrolled as an advocate in 1992. Over his career, he served as Special Counsel for the Allahabad High Court and Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 2013 before being appointed an Additional Judge of the High Court in October 2014.

In February 2017, he was made a permanent judge and was later transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took office on October 11, 2021. His tenure in Delhi has now been cut short with the Collegium’s recommendation to move him back to the Allahabad High Court.

The Supreme Court’s decision has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged cash recovery and its influence on the Collegium’s move. However, there has been no official statement regarding any ongoing inquiry into the matter.

Legal experts and members of the judiciary are closely watching further developments, as the decision signals a significant step in judicial accountability and transparency.
