In a transformative move to modernise India’s postal and geospatial infrastructure, the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has launched two innovative web platforms: ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’.
While this step marks a milestone in the country’s journey toward precision governance under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, it also brings critical implications for legal professionals, particularly advocates who routinely rely on accurate address verification while sending notices.
Why Advocates Should Take Note?
The Legal practitioners often face challenges in locating recipients due to outdated, incomplete, or ambiguous addresses. This not only causes procedural delays but also risks invalid service of notice. The newly launched portals aim to bridge this gap by offering geo-verified, location-precise address data — a game changer for the legal community.
How Is It Relevant to Legal Notice Service?
Know Your DIGIPIN Web Portal
What is DIGIPIN?
A geo-coded, grid-based digital address developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It provides precise geographic identification down to a small grid, ensuring pinpoint accuracy.
Use for Legal Professionals:
Validate the exact geolocation of an address before dispatching notices. Retrieve the DIGIPIN using either traditional address data or latitude-longitude coordinates. Incorporate DIGIPIN into legal documents to bolster delivery credibility and traceability.
Know Your PIN Code Web Portal
Modernised PIN Code Identification:
Using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), this tool enables users to determine the correct six-digit PIN code based on their exact location.
Use for Legal Professionals
Ensure that the jurisdictionally correct PIN code is used in legal notices, especially when posting to remote or rural locations. Avoid misdelivery or rejection of notices due to incorrect or outdated postal codes.
Accessing the Portals
Both services can be accessed via the India Post Digital Addressing Portal https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mypincode/menu
Open Data & Legal Integration
The All India PIN Code Boundary geo-json dataset has been made publicly available through the Open Government Data (OGD) platform. Advocates, law firms, and courts can now integrate these data sets into their internal systems for batch verification, litigation planning, and bulk notice dispatch.
Department’s Vision: Address-as-a-Service (AaaS)
With this initiative, India Post is not merely enhancing postal service — it is delivering “Address-as-a-Service” (AaaS). This positions the address itself as a verifiable digital asset that can be used across sectors, including judiciary, real estate, logistics, and government records.
Public Feedback Encouraged
Both portals invite user feedback to refine the system continuously. Advocates and court staff are encouraged to report any discrepancies or suggestions for improving address mapping and accuracy.
Final Word for Legal Fraternity
As legal processes increasingly move toward digital enablement, accurate and verifiable service of legal noticesbecomes paramount. With the rollout of DIGIPIN and modernised PIN Code verification, the legal community now has at its disposal a powerful tool to enhance procedural integrity, reduce errors, and ensure notices reach their intended recipients — on time and at the right location.
