Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has reportedly sought a report from the Andhra Pradesh High Court administration over a controversial courtroom exchange involving a young advocate during proceedings before the High Court earlier this week.

The controversy arose during a hearing conducted by Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao on Monday, where the Court is learnt to have directed that a young advocate be sent to judicial custody. However, the direction was ultimately not acted upon following intervention by members of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Bar.

The incident has sparked widespread debate within the legal fraternity after a video clip of the courtroom proceedings surfaced on social media platforms. Several advocates and senior members of the Bar expressed concern over the manner in which the interaction between the Bench and the young lawyer allegedly unfolded during the hearing.

The development has reignited discussions on courtroom decorum, judicial restraint, and the relationship between the Bench and the Bar. Lawyers across various forums have stressed that while courts possess powers to maintain discipline and ensure orderly proceedings, such authority must be exercised with caution, particularly when dealing with young members of the profession.

The intervention by the Andhra Pradesh High Court Bar reportedly played a key role in defusing the situation before the judicial custody direction could be implemented. Members of the Bar are understood to have engaged with the Court administration to prevent escalation of the matter.

The episode has also triggered conversations on the increasing use of social media in highlighting courtroom incidents and the resulting public scrutiny of judicial conduct. Legal commentators noted that circulation of courtroom videos often intensifies institutional concerns regarding transparency, accountability, and preservation of the dignity of courts.

The move by the CJI to seek a report is being viewed as a significant development, indicating that the matter has drawn attention at the highest judicial level. The report from the Andhra Pradesh High Court administration is expected to provide details regarding the circumstances that led to the exchange and the subsequent intervention by the Bar.

The incident continues to generate reactions from advocates and legal observers, many of whom have emphasized the need for maintaining mutual respect between judges and lawyers to preserve the integrity of the justice delivery system.
