The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has approved the promotion of senior customs and indirect tax officer Satyajit Singh to the grade of Chief Commissioner/Director General of Customs and Indirect Taxes (HAG+), in a significant senior-level elevation within the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

The order states that the promotion is against the panel year 2026 and will take effect from the date on which the officer assumes charge of the promotional post.

According to the office order, Satyajit Singh, an officer of the 1993 batch, has been promoted to the grade of Chief Commissioner/Director General of Customs and Indirect Taxes in the Higher Administrative Grade Plus (HAG+), corresponding to Level 16 of the Pay Matrix.

The order specifies that the promotion will remain effective until further orders. The elevation places the officer in one of the senior-most administrative grades in the customs and indirect tax administration.

The promotion is subject to the officer assuming charge of the post. The government has also clarified that his regular posting will be decided separately in due course, with the approval of the competent authority.

A notable aspect of the order is the direction concerning the immediate assumption of the promotional post.

Until a regular posting is decided, the officer is required to assume charge of the promotional post “on in situ (as is where is) basis.” This means that the promotion takes effect without an immediate transfer to a separately designated regular posting.

The arrangement allows the government to give effect to the promotion while leaving the question of the officer’s regular assignment to be settled subsequently.

The office order specifically states that the regular posting will be decided in due course with the approval of the competent authority.

The Department of Revenue has also prescribed a timeline for reporting compliance with the promotion order.

A compliance report concerning the officer’s joining is required to be sent to the Board by August 31, 2026. A copy of the report is also to be endorsed to the Additional Director General (HRM-II), Directorate General of Human Resource Development (DGHRD).

The deadline provides the administrative framework for recording the officer’s assumption of charge following the promotion.

The promotion comes within the broader administrative structure of the CBIC, which oversees India’s customs administration and the implementation of indirect tax laws and policies falling within its jurisdiction.

Officers at the Chief Commissioner/Director General level occupy senior leadership positions in the department and are entrusted with responsibilities relating to administration, revenue collection, enforcement, customs operations and other functions assigned to their respective formations.

The HAG+ designation represents a senior level in the government’s Pay Matrix. The order places the promotion at Level 16, reflecting the seniority and administrative responsibility associated with the post.
