PM Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport: A New Era of Aviation for India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects and a landmark in the country’s aviation expansion. Developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group, the new greenfield airport marks a major boost for Mumbai’s connectivity and economic growth.

Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore for its first phase, the NMIA is designed to ease congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and strengthen Mumbai’s position as a global aviation hub. Commercial operations — including both domestic and international flights — are expected to commence in December 2025.

A Vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’

Calling the airport a “glimpse of Viksit Bharat,” Prime Minister Modi said the new facility embodies India’s progress toward modern infrastructure, efficient governance, and global connectivity.

“Now Mumbai has a new airport — Asia’s largest connectivity hub. This airport will not only improve travel for citizens but will also open new doors of opportunity for farmers and businesses across Maharashtra,” the Prime Minister said at the inaugural ceremony.

Modi emphasized that the NMIA would connect farmers in Maharashtra to international markets in the Middle East and Europe, thereby expanding agricultural exports and generating new business opportunities.
He added, “This airport will attract investment, create jobs, and strengthen our position as a global aviation leader.”

India’s Expanding Aviation Network

Reflecting on India’s aviation journey, PM Modi noted the rapid growth in airport infrastructure over the past decade.

“In 2014, India had only 74 airports. Today, that number has more than doubled to over 160. Our goal is to make India a global Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub by the end of this decade,” he said.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his 2014 vision that even those “wearing hawai chappals” (slippers) should be able to fly — a dream now becoming a reality with improved air connectivity and affordable travel.

Technological and Environmental Excellence

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is being lauded as one of the most advanced and sustainable airports in Asia. It incorporates cutting-edge smart technology, green energy systems, and efficient passenger flow design, aligning with India’s sustainability goals.

The terminal architecture draws inspiration from the spirit of Mumbai, combining modern engineering with eco-friendly practices. The project is expected to handle 20 million passengers annually in its initial phase, eventually scaling up to 90 million passengers per year after full completion.

Metro Connectivity and Urban Development Boost

The airport’s launch coincides with the inauguration of Mumbai’s fully underground Metro Aqua Line-3, providing seamless travel across the city. PM Modi called it a “big achievement” for a densely built metropolis like Mumbai, enhancing accessibility to NMIA and reducing travel time significantly.

The development of NMIA is also expected to spur growth in Navi Mumbai’s MSME, logistics, and real estate sectors, transforming the region into a major economic corridor for Maharashtra.

Transforming India’s Infrastructure Landscape

The inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport represents more than just a transportation milestone. It showcases India’s commitment to large-scale, world-class infrastructure projects that align with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 — a developed and self-reliant nation.

As commercial operations begin later this year, NMIA is set to redefine Mumbai’s aviation landscape, decongest its skies, and serve as a symbol of India’s growing global stature.
