In a significant development today, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of 14 High Court judges across the country. Among those chosen for reassignment is Justice Dinesh Mehta, who is to be moved from the Rajasthan High Court to the Delhi High Court.

Profile: Who Is Justice Dinesh Mehta?

  • Educational Background & Career Start: Born on 28 January 1968, Justice Mehta holds a B.Com (Hons.), is a qualified ACA, and also possesses an LL.B. degree. He was enrolled as an advocate on 6 September 1992, and elevated to the bench on 16 November 2016.
  • Legal Practice: Before his elevation, he represented diverse corporate and institutional clients in matters of taxation, arbitration, banking, company, electricity, environment, insurance, agrarian, and municipal law. He also handled constitutional, contract, mining, election, civil, service, and industrial disputes .
  • Key Panels & Roles: Served as standing counsel for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Additionally, he was on the panel for Oriental Insurance, United India Insurance, IDBI, NHAI, Hindustan Zinc, RFC, and SEBI. Between 1999 and 2003, he also served as panel lawyer for Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP) .

  • PIL Dismissal on His Appointment: The Rajasthan High Court dismissed a PIL challenging his appointment, calling it devoid of merit and legally unsustainable. The bench emphasized that the proper collegium procedure under Article 217 had been followed.
