The Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday issued a notification announcing the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The appointment, made under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, comes into effect from the date he formally assumes charge of his office.

Justice Chandrashekhar, who has been serving as a Judge of the Bombay High Court, will now head one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious High Courts, with jurisdiction over Maharashtra and Goa. His elevation follows the vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice.

The official notification, signed by Jagannath Rasan, Joint Secretary in the Department of Justice, has been circulated to key state and central authorities, including the Governors and Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Goa, the Registrar General of the Bombay High Court, and the President’s Secretariat at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The appointment of Justice Chandrashekhar is expected to provide continuity and leadership at the Bombay High Court, which plays a crucial role in adjudicating matters of national and regional importance, ranging from constitutional questions to high-profile commercial disputes.

The Bombay High Court, established in 1862, has a distinguished history of eminent jurists and landmark judgments. With Justice Chandrashekhar at the helm, the Court is poised to continue its legacy of upholding the rule of law and strengthening the justice delivery system.
