As the September 15 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for FY 2024-25 approaches, taxpayers are making a last-minute rush to complete the process. However, many have reported difficulties while accessing the e-filing portal, sparking calls for another extension.

On Saturday, several users complained that the income tax portal was running into multiple issues — from trouble logging in, delays in response time, to errors in downloading crucial documents such as Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). While some could log in, they were unable to proceed with the filing process smoothly.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has already reported that over six crore ITRs have been filed for AY 2025-26. Still, with the deadline looming, taxpayers are expressing frustration on social media platform X, trending hashtags such as #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately, #itrduedateextension, and #ITR2025.

One user wrote, ā€œAIS – Not working, TIS – Not working, 26AS – Not working. Only login to the income tax portal is working, really appreciated though.ā€ Another added, ā€œITR extension is the need of the hour as the portal is not working at all. Request to extend the due dates to ensure smooth filing of ITR.ā€

Screenshots shared online also show frequent logouts and ā€œaccess deniedā€ errors while downloading AIS and TIS. Tax professionals further highlighted issues with OTP generation and TRACES portal access, complicating the filing process for many.

Income Tax Department’s Response

Amid mounting complaints, the Income Tax Department has maintained that the portal is functioning properly. In a post on X, it stated: ā€œOur checks show that the e-filing portal is working fine. You may please try again after clearing your browser cache or by using an alternate browser.ā€

Background on Deadline

Originally, the deadline to file ITR for AY 2025-26 was July 31, 2025. However, in May, the government extended it to September 15, 2025, citing delays in updated forms, utilities, and operational readiness. With the revised deadline now just two days away, taxpayers are hoping the government will grant another extension to avoid penalties.

So far, no official word has been issued on whether the due date will be extended beyond September 15.
