The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has incorporated new changes on the Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) portal, introducing a mandatory feature for reporting the Audit Opinion of assessees.

The update comes merely five days before the statutory tax audit deadline, sparking concern and confusion among professionals already racing against time to complete audit filings.

According to the latest modification, CAs generating UDINs for tax audit reports under Section 44AB of the Income Tax Act will now be required to explicitly indicate the nature of their audit opinion—whether it is unmodified, qualified, adverse, or disclaimer—at the time of UDIN generation.

While ICAI has stated that the move aims to enhance transparency and ensure better compliance mapping, the timing of the rollout has drawn criticism from the professional community. Many practitioners have pointed out that such a significant procedural change, so close to the due date, adds to the compliance pressure already heightened by system slowdowns on the Income Tax e-filing portal.

With the October 31, 2025 deadline fast approaching, the new compliance requirement is expected to test the preparedness of audit firms and professionals already grappling with last-minute filings and technical bottlenecks.
