Cases of GST (goods and services tax) evasion amounting to more than ₹2,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh will now be investigated by SIT (Special Investigation Team). The state government has constituted an SIT under the chairmanship of the IG (Economic Offences Wing) to investigate 188 cases filed across 44 districts related to bogus firms and fake ITC (Input Tax Credit) used to evade GST.
The SIT will be headed by IG (EOW) Brijesh Pandey, and its members include Additional SP Amit Kumar Singh and ASP Chitrakoot Sushil Kumar.
Under the leadership of IG Industries, the SIT has already started gathering departmental documents from the state. Out of 188 FIRs registered across 44 districts—including Meerut—many are linked to bogus forms and fake IDs. The SIT has begun its investigation and has obtained documents from the GST Department related to these cases.
Sources say that the SIT and GST authorities will conduct joint investigations and take strict action against those involved in GST theft. The SIT is currently handling cases in Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Agra, Meerut, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Aligarh, and other districts.
A meeting was held recently, in which the department reviewed the cases relating to bogus firms and fake input tax credit. Instructions were issued to ensure that no accused escapes legal action. The SIT has been directed to expedite investigations into all pending cases.
In 2018 as well, multiple cases of GST evasion through fake firms were exposed. The department has now given instructions to initiate strong action against the accused and those involved in creating shell companies.
