In a move aimed at facilitating trade and supporting consumer interests, the Ministry of Finance has issued Notification amending existing customs duties on various rice imports from May 1, 2025.

Under the revised customs rules, several categories of rice — including parboiled rice with Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, other parboiled rice, and certain semi-milled or wholly milled varieties — have been granted complete exemption from customs duties.

The Parboiled Rice (GI Recognised) (HS code: 1006 30 11) will now attract zero customs duty.

The Other Parboiled Rice (HS code: 1006 30 19) has also been made duty-free.

The Other Rice (GI Recognised) (HS code: 1006 30 91) will continue to be exempt.

A new exemption is introduced for semi-milled or wholly milled rice not already covered under existing GI or parboiled categories (HS code: 1006 30 99), which will now also be duty-free.

The updated notification also modifies tariff entries under earlier Customs Notifications 27/2011 and 22/2024, aligning them with the new classification system and exemption status.
